Philippines : DOH-CAR conducts Drug Awareness Summit for LCEs, health officials.

The Department of Health spearheaded a Drug Awareness Summit for Cordillera local chief executives (LCEs) and officials of provincial health offices at Venus Parkview Hotel here, in line with the Philippine Health Agenda 20162022 and the governments campaign against illegal drugs.

DOHCordillera Regional Director Dr. Lakshmi Legaspi said the summit was aimed to help LCEs and their local health partners to further improve their communitybased rehabilitation and treatment programs and services through the sharing of best practices and interaction with the invited resource speakers.

Lilybeth Selda, Preventive Education Section head of Quezon Citys Tahanan talked about their LGUs communitybased treatment and care services while Loac, Pangasinan Municipal Health Officer Dr.Danilo Rebugio shared their community- based rehabilitation program. Dr. Jerome Paler of Gawad Kalinga Southern Leyte also shared their Rehab Without Walls program.

Highlighting the summit was the pledge of commitment of the participants to support the DOHs campaign on dangerous drug prevention and treatment towards the overall goal of achieving drugfree barangays, municipalities and provinces for a better Cordillera and for a better Philippines.

On the governments campaign against dangerous drugs, Legaspi disclosed that the health department continues to provide training to barangay and municipal anti-drug abuse councils given their important role in the provision of communitybased dangerous drug prevention, rehabilitation, and treatment programs/services.

For centerbased rehabilitation and treatment, DOH also gives trainings to doctors and health workers, especially on the mental health gaps.

Philippine Drug Enforcement AgencyCordillera Public Information Officer Frederick Joseph Calulut, meanwhile, presented updates on the fight against dangerous drugs.

From the 01 July 2016 to 26 September 2017 nationwide #RealNumbers data, it shows that with 76,863 antidrug operations were conducted by various government law enforcement agencies, from these, at least 113,932 drug personalities were arrested, and 593 minors rescued from the illegal drug menace.

He also stressed the important role of local partners down to the barangay level, both in dangerous drug prevention and rehabilitation and treatment.

"People on the ground will be the first to know what is going in their respective communities, thus we encourage you to report to proper authorities any illegal activities in your area," Calulut said.
