Philip A. Samko, 60.

WORCESTER Philip A. Samko, 60, of Worcester, passed away on Saturday, February 11, 2012, in his home, surrounded by his loving family.

He is survived by his wife of thirty-four years, Catherine A. (Lacouture) Samko; their daughter, Bern Samko of Santa Cruz, CA; a brother, Raymond Samko of Worcester; his mother in law, Sophie P. Lacouture; his brother in law, Joseph and his wife Terri Lacouture all of Marlborough. Born in Worcester, son of the late Alphonse and Mary (Astukewicz) Samko and has lived here most of his life. Phil graduated from Worcester's Doherty High School and attended Boston University. He worked as a bookkeeper for Terminal Warehouse, and later for Primarque Products.

Phil was a Charter Member of Squadron #435, Sons of American Legion at the Vernon Hill Post, Worcester. He was a member of The Department of Massachusetts American Legion Athletic Committee and was the Worcester County District 4 American Legion Athletic Chairperson. He was a past Detachment of Mass. Sons of the American Legion Chaplain.

He was Past President of the Worcester Area Baseball Umpires Association and Past President and Secretary-Treasurer of the Central Mass. Conference of Football Officials; a member of Board 26 Central Massachusetts Chapter of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials.

Philip was a timekeeper at the College of The Holy Cross, working all the basketball home games. He further contributed to his community by serving on the Worcester Parks and Recreation Commission from 1986 to 1996, for many years as Chairman of the Commission.

Calling hours and funeral services for Philip will be held on Wednesday, February 15, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. in MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester, followed by a Funeral Service at 7 p.m. Sons of the American Legion will perform their memorial service at 6:00 p.m. during the calling hours.

In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to the Phil Samko American Legion Baseball District 4 Scholarship Fund 65 Bowker St. Worcester MA 01604.
