Limiting treatment of phase-locked loop theory to the basics, Bianchi (a senior microwave engineer at SDS Technology, Italy) primarily intends this work as a description of the calculation of phase-locked loop performance by use of standard mathematical or circuit analysis programs like MATHCAD and SIMETRIX. He describes the operation of the phase detector, loop filter, VCO and crystal oscillator, and frequency divider. He then discusses the fractional frequency divider with analog and digital compensation. In what he describes as the core chapter, he describes in detail how to calculate and optimize performance, mainly dealing with stability, phase noise, and settling time. The final chapter considers miscellaneous topics, including testing and debugging, sampled phase-locked loops, multiloop synthesizers, and the direct digital synthesizer. The CD-ROM contains all the book's analyses in MATHCAD and SIMETRIX, with user-variable parameters and configuration
