Pets can be killers.

Byline: Eileen Taylor

I AM sorry to hear that pet shop worker and reptile fan Lee Thompson has faced an agonising four-day fight for life after being bitten by one of the world's deadliest snakes - not in the Australian desert, where it belongs, but in his English pet shop.

The death adder which nearly took his life is the fastest striking of all Australian snakes and is one of the 10 most poisonous snakes on the planet.

What I would really like to know is what it was doing in a pet shop in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex where, presumably, it could be bought by someone who would take it home to their house - which could be next door to someone just like you or me.

When is the government going to ban the importation of such dangerous, foreign creatures?
