Strong signs of support and solidarity are emerging in the pet community for its bold new initiative, the "Million Pet Mercy Mission," Petopia.com announced today. More key partners have joined the crusade to find loving homes for one million of the estimated six million pets threatened with euthanasia in the year 2000. Important pet-loving organizations, trainers and celebrities, including the Doris Day Animal Foundation, renowned veterinarian and behavior expert Dr. Rolan Tripp, and National PetCare Centers, Inc., have joined co-founder and Chicken Soup for the Cat & Dog Lovers's Soul co-author Dr. Marty Becker, the ASPCA, Petfinder -- the largest online shelter adoption network, and The Amanda Foundation in supporting the Mission.

"We are witnessing an unprecedented avalanche of commitment. Passionate people are moving past the rhetoric of the problem to the reality of providing solutions," said Dr. Marty Becker.

"Success for Petopia.com isn't just the number of hits and products sold, it is the number of lives saved," said Andrea Reisman, CEO of Petopia.com. "The Internet plays a critical role in uniting individuals in a common pet-centric cause, and bringing animal shelters online to increase pet adoption rates is just one example of how it is making a positive impact."

The following individuals and organizations have joined the Million Pet Mercy Mission and will provide services to meet the three core initiatives; preventing the birth of unwanted animals by aggressively promoting and subsidizing spaying and neutering; slowing the inflow of pets into shelters by helping with proper pet selection; and turbo-charging the outflow of pets from shelters through online rescue efforts to find loving homes for pets.

Doris Day Animal Foundation

The Doris Day Animal Foundation is a fearless crusader for animal rights and the prevention of animal cruelty. They are the official organizer of the renowned Spay Day USA and vigorously support the Million Pet Mercy Mission. The 6th Annual Spay Day USA provides an incredible opportunity to help stop the tragedy of companion animal overpopulation before it has a chance to start.

Ginny the Dog who Rescues Cats

Ginny the Dog who Rescues Cats and her best friend Philip Gonzalez, the co-author of The Blessing of the Animals and The Dog Who Rescues Cats, openly endorse the Mission. A shelter pet herself, Ginny has an uncanny ability to find, rescue, and nurture ailing cats. Inspired by her example, Philip devotes his life to animal rescue and supports the Million Pet Mercy Missions' goal of saving pets' lives through finding and providing care to sick and ailing pets.

Dr. Rolan Tripp

Dr. Rolan Tripp, an accomplished veterinarian and noted lecturer on animal behavior, will support the Million Pet Mercy Mission through his programs that focus on creating a bond between pets and their caregivers. Dr. Tripp has more than 20 years experience in treating pets with behavior problems and is a paid behavior consultant to Animal Planet. He is currently on a national speaker tour addressing pet separation anxiety and garnering support for the Million Pet Mercy Mission.

National PetCare Centers, Inc.

National PetCare Centers, Inc. is a family of more than 70 veterinary practices located throughout the United States with a focus on providing pets with the highest quality veterinary medical and ancillary care, while providing clients with outstanding service and compassion. Founded and managed by veterinarians, National PetCare Centers will use its extended presence to support the Million Pet Mercy Missions goal for raising awareness of pet overpopulation, adoptions and behavioral training. According to CEO Gary D. Burge, DVM, National PetCare Centers is committed to educating pet owners on this life saving mission.

Birds and Animals Unlimited

Birds and Animals Unlimited owns, trains and manages the careers of animals in the film industry. A longtime leader in the business, they have managed the careers of such notable stars as Moose, a.k.a. "Eddie" from Frasier, Freckles and Maisey from 101 Dalmatians, and even the American Bulldog from the Little Rascals. Many celebrity pets have a rags to riches story -- having been rescued from a shelter and then achieved stardom. Birds and Animals Unlimited will join with Petopia.com in showcasing celebrity pets that have risen from shelter pet to superstar.

"Moose was on his way to a shelter when he was rescued," said Lorraine Putnam, operations manager for Birds and Animals Unlimited. "Seventy to seventy-five percent of our dogs come from shelter and rescue foundations. The Million Pet Mercy Mission is an excellent vehicle for teaching people that sometimes the most magical of pets, whether for the family or the film world, can be found in your hometown shelter."

Bash Dibra

Bash Dibra is a noted dog behaviorist, 'dog trainer to the stars' and author of DogSpeak. Bash has trained the pets of such celebrities as Matthew Broderick, Kathleen Turner, and Alec Baldwin. Through gaining a better understanding of your pet's body language and environment, behavior-challenged canines learn how to avoid the shelter and stay in their happy homes.

Dr. Ian Dunbar

Dr. Ian Dunbar, a renowned veterinarian, dog trainer and behaviorist, is Director of the Center for Applied Animal Behavior, founder of The Association of Pet Dog Trainers and host of the popular British TV series Dogs With Dunbar. Ian is also a prolific author of numerous pets books and videos. Ian supports the Mission through public education on how pets think, how they learn, and on why they act the way they do. Through fostering a deeper understanding of their pets, Ian gives pet-lovers the tools to work through behavioral problems that might jeopardize their successful adoption in a loving home.
