Perv wins shorter jail.

Byline: Dan Warburton

A VILE sex predator who tried to assault a girl of nine in a public toilet has had his jail sentence cut.

John Newton followed the girl and smashed his way into her cubicle.

She fought back and Newton, 29, fled but he was arrested soon afterwards.

In 2015 at Carlisle Crown Court he admitted false imprisonment with intent to commit a sexual offence. He was jailed for 12 years.

The judge said it was "about as bad as it gets".

But appeal judge Mrs Justice McGowan ruled the jail term "manifestly excessive" as it caused no serious injury. She cut it to 10 years.

The judge said Newton, of Workington, Cumbria, will serve at least two thirds of the term. An eight-year extended licence period stays in place.
