Peroni beer gets a running sponsorship

Peroni beer, Barton Beers Ltd. import from Italy, has announced the sponsorship of a team of 15 runners from Italy who competed in the New York City Marathon, November 5.

Among the runners sponsored by Peroni, four were over the age of 60, including Gino Baldazzi, 68; Mario Gallerahi, 62; Guiseppina Iotti, 61; and Albertina Benassi, 60.

"We're helping these athletes to come to the U.S. and compete among the finest athletes from around the world, just as Peroni came to America to compete among the finest beers," said Mike Mazzoni, vice president and general manager, Barton Beers.

One marathoner, Elio Benatti, who also participated in the recent Chicago Marathon, said, "We are very proud to be sponsored by Peroni because it shows that the American people and American companies have as much faith in Italian athletes as Italians do in American athletes."

Benatti, an amateur runner since 1969, reported he "ran the race slowly, about four hours, because I wanted to take my time and see the Big Apple through the eyes of a tourist."
