Pepco workers to pay part of medical premium.

A strike against Potomac Electric Power Co.'s operations in Washington, DC, and nearby Maryland was averted when members of Local 1900 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers finally accepted a company proposal calling for employees to begin paying part of their medical insurance premiums. The new obligation is $10 a month for single employees and $30 for those with families.

Aspects of the settlement favorable to the 3,200 employees included a 4-percent wage increase retroactive to June 1988, an additional 4-percent increase in June 1989, and a 4.5 -percent increase in June 1990. Prior to the settlement, pay rates for linemen ranged from $16.37 to $17.20 an hour. Other provisions included retirement at full pension rates after 30 years of service at age 57 (formerly 60), effective immediately, and at age 55 effective in June 1989; 4 weeks of paid vacation after 10 years of service (formerly 15); and a three-stage increase (totaling 25 cents) in the 85-cent-an-hour shift premium.
