IRSG appoints new secretary general

A.F.S. Budiman was appointed secretary general for the International Rubber Study Group.

Budiman began his career in 1968 as a research officer with the Institute for Research Crops in Bogor, Indonesia. In 1983, he became expert assistant to the junior minister for the development of estate crops. In 1988, Budiman was appointed to his recent position as executive director of Gapkindo, the Rubber Association of Indonesia.

During Budiman's tenure with Gapkindo, Indonesia has become the second largest producer of natural rubber in the world. He has been part of IRSG's committee of expert rubber statisticians and industry advisory panel since 1990.

Budiman replaces M.E. Cain, who is retiring.


Ben Smith joined Magpower as application engineer.


Franz Reiterer was named president of Engel North America.

Rod Millhof will lead the newly-formed Cooper-Standard Automotive's global sealing division. Frank Burnside will lead the North American sealing division. The European sealing division will be headed by Brian Batey. The vibration control division will be led by Paul Gilbert. Ted McQuade will lead the plastics division. John Fahl will lead the North American tire division. Oliver Rubber, a Cooper Tire division, will be led by Larry Enders. Cooper Tire & Rubber elected Ronald Roudebush to the company's board of directors and appointed Stephen Schroeder treasurer.

Francois Perier was appointed chief operating officer and board member of Elf Atochem. Kelli Booth was appointed product manager for Thermolite stabilizers at Elf Atochem North America.

Ronald Mayfield was promoted to president of Preferred Rubber Compounding. David Metcalf was promoted to chief financial officer. Timothy Killeen joined Preferred Rubber's board of directors.

Teknor Apex promoted five business managers to vice presidents. They are: Robert Brookman, Alan Bruder, Louis Cappuci, John Cubbal and John McGrath. Charles Brereton was named product manager of custom molded rubber products for Teknor Apex.

David Fisher was appointed vice president of operations for Elementis Specialties.

Lou Perfetti was appointed plant manager for Goodyear Chemical's Beaumont, TX polymer facility.

French Oil Mill Machinery promoted Jason McDaniel to director of engineering.

Minerals Technologies appointed Anton Dulski and Paul Saueracker senior vice presidents.

Vitex Systems named Michael Sullivan president.

Wilma Kirkley joined Louis P. Batson as administrative assistant.


Ken Paul was appointed territory manager for DSM Elastomers Americas' sales and technical service department. Paul McKinstry was promoted to marketing manager for the company's automotive business.

Elementis Performance Polymers appointed Robert Rothfeder technical sales representative.

Specialty Minerals hired Dennis Shaffer as western regional sales manager.

Ralf Steinheuer joined TSI as European sales manager for extrusion and light industrial products.

Ben Rushing, Jr., joined Louis P. Batson as area sales manager.

Neville Chemical promoted Parish Basham to midwestern district sales manager.


Matthew West was named manager of non-tire reports for the Rubber Manufacturers Association.

Louis Hegedus, Elf Atochem, was elected chairman of the chemical engineering section of the National Academy of Engineering.

The Automotive International Association elected Mitch Bennett, Qualitee International, chairman.


The Overseas Automotive Council awarded F.Carl Smith, Federal-Mogul, its lifetime achievement award.

John Gillespie received the 2000 J.H. Hall Composites Manufacturing Award granted by the Composites Manufacturing Association of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.

E. Charles Galloway, Edison Polymer Innovation Corp., received the Akron Council of Engineering's distinguished award of council. Ruth Murray, ACS Rubber Div., received the ACESS award.


Karl Pieper will retire from Engel North America. After retirement, Pieper will serve the company as a member of its board of directors.

William Hattendorf will retire-from Cooper Tire & Rubber, after 36 years of employment.

Mike Burns retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber.

Bill Wright was named vice president of sales and a member of the company's board of directors.

Massimo Ambanelli was appointed director of business management/development for Ausimont USA.

Alison Deutsch was named manager of global marketing communications for the company.

RELATED ARTICLE: Akrochem chair Silver dies at 79

Richard Silver died Wednesday, October 27, 1999 after a brief illness. He was 79.

Silver was chairman and former president and CEO of Akrochem in Akron. He spent over 60 years in the rubber industry, starting out in the warehouse of his family's business, Akron Chemical.

In 1947, he joined Akron Chemical's sales staff and covered various technical sales accounts throughout the United States for the company, which later became Akrochem.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a graduate of Western Reserve Academy, Dartmouth College and the Tuck School of Business.
