Pensioner's plight.

Byline: Tony Stewart

EMMERDALE Mon-Fri ITV In a soap renowned equally for its entertaining sensationalism and silliness, no amount of praise can do justice to this story of such convincing emotional intensity.

For even in a village full of nosey parkers and gossips, it's amazing that the plight of a pensioner such as starchy Edna could go unnoticed for such a long time.

After losing her job and with her precious dog Tootsie needing expensive veterinary treatment, she's so broke she can't afford food, to turn her heating on, or pay PS4,000 to have her roof repaired.

With a consistently excellent performance by Shirley Stelfox, Edna has to resort to selling her father's treasured medals to pay the bills. With her health failing, she then collapses.

But at least Dim Jim finds her and takes her in. It may be a harrowing tale of our times, but it's also unmissable television.
