Pennsylvania Manufacturer Selected in Innovative Energy Saving Relighting Project at Pittsburgh International Airport.
ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. -- In what is believed to be the largest lighting installation of its kind in the United States, Appalachian Lighting Systems, Inc. (ALSI) was selected by the Allegheny County Airport Authority to manufacture and deliver 1,347 new light emitting diode (LED) lighting fixtures at the Pittsburgh International Airport. The LED units will replace the current lighting fixtures at the airport's Parking Garage and Deck and at the Passenger Drop-off and Pick-up areas. The project is expected to save the authority at least $158,000 in energy costs every year.
ALSI, a Pennsylvania-based manufacturer, developed industry-leading solid state lighting products to meet the requirements of this comprehensive energy and cost-saving project. ALSI was supported by Imbue Technology Solutions, Inc., ALSI's Pittsburgh-based distributor and Cree, the market leader in semiconductor lighting solutions headquartered in North Carolina as well as a host of other U.S. component suppliers.
"The green lighting project at Pittsburgh International Airport is a win-win situation because it will increase energy efficiency and decrease operating costs for the Airport Authority," said Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato. "The LED units will also be manufactured right here in Southwestern Pennsylvania, creating jobs and helping to solidify our standing as a leader in green technology and environmental stewardship." David McAnally, President & CEO of ALSI, noted "In echoing Mr. Onorato's comments, we are also very proud of the fact that - as an American company - in addition to the vast percentage of the components in these innovative ALSI lighting systems being developed and manufactured here in the Commonwealth and in other parts of the U.S. , these luminaries are engineered to provide between 73 to 82 percent savings in energy costs, and last essentially maintenance free for as long as 20 years. As example, the luminaire we developed for the parking garage is ranked at this time, through the US. Department of Energy Lighting Facts(CM) program, as the most energy efficient light of its type in the world."
Allegheny County Airport Authority (ACAA) Executive Director, Brad Penrod, stated "We are pleased to be working with the ALSI team in this pioneering approach to airport facility lighting. The Allegheny County Airport Authority is committed to conserving energy and reducing its environmental footprint. This solution saves money, while advancing our mission of exceptional customer service in a safe and secure airport." The Airport Authority is able to implement this project thanks to grant funding from PA Conservation Works and Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority.
"Cree continues to push the limits of LED technology with our advanced XLamp LED components," said Paul Thieken, Cree director of marketing, LED components. "We are pleased that Cree's lighting-class LEDs are at the heart of the energy-efficient ALSI fixtures that will be illuminating the Pittsburgh International Airport for years to come."
Appalachian Lighting Systems, Inc. specializes in developing and manufacturing high-powered, ultra energy-efficient, light emitting diode (LED) lighting fixtures.
