Pennsylvania DEP Awards Clean Air Grants to State Partnerships.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recently awarded $242,740 to four Pennsylvania Air Quality Partnership programs designed to help inform residents about the dangers of ground-level ozone as well as actions they can take to help improve air quality.The grants include $59,700 for the Southwest Pennsylvania Air Quality Partnership, Inc. to fund air quality activities in Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Washington and Westmore counties; $55,200 for the American Lung Association of Pennsylvania to fund the Lehigh Valley/Berks Air Quality Partnership for Berks, Lehigh and Northampton counties; $62,840 for the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission to support the Susquehanna Air Quality Partnership for Cumberland, Cauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties; and $65,000 for the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission to fund the Southeast Air Quality Partnership in Philadelphia and Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties.
"We are right in the middle of ozone season in Pennsylvania," said DEP secretary Kathleen McGinty. "During these summer months, especially on hot and humid days, air pollution can be a major health threat, reaching levels that cause irritation or respiratory distress for at-risk populations. It is a serious environmental and public health problem that DEP and its partners are working to address. These grants support programs put in place to inform residents and keep the air we breathe clean and safe."
