Pender to share the passion.

Byline: Paul Denison The Register-Guard

The Green Garter Band, an elite group of full-scholarship music students at the University of Oregon, will perform Wednesday night with a guest artist who studied at the School of Hot Licks - Kansas City, New York and New Jersey campuses.

Mark Pender, better known as "The Loveman," plays trumpet with the Max Weinberg 7 on `Late Night With Conan O'Brien.' He also plays guitar and harmonica, and is featured in sketches as an overwrought vocalist who wails on about people and events in the news until O'Brien reins him in.

Wednesday night, The Loveman will focus all that passion on music by James Brown, Ozzy Osbourne, Maynard Ferguson, Real Big Fish, Tower of Power, Earth Wind & Fire and Ben Folds Five. He'll also bring along charts from the Mark Pender Band.

Pender can boast of 12 years' experience on the O'Brien show and nearly a quarter of a century playing with Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. Membership in the Jukes led to collateral gigs with other New Jersey stars, including Little Steven, Jon Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen.

Even further back - as a teen-ager on the Kansas City jazz, blues and funk scene - he was schooled by elders, including Jay McShann and Joe Tur- ner.

Although he's had a hand in more than 10 gold and platinum records and now leads his own New York City band, Pender told an interviewer a couple of years ago, "I still haven't made a name for myself. ... But if you last long enough, the resume starts to look a lot better, you know?"

That resume - or to be more accurate, word of mouth among musicians who've worked with him - got Pender tour or studio gigs with artist the likes of Ricky Martin, David Bowie and Robert Cray.

Pender was getting ready to tour with Cray when he got a call to join the house band being formed for `Late Night With Conan O'Brien.'

"It was a hard choice at that time," Pender told interviewer Michelle Paponetti. "But I really wanted to stay home and stick around and actually live in New York rather than touring all the time.

`And it turned out great."

Pender has performed on all of O'Brien's shows since the premiere in 1993. And they still can't stop him from chewing the scenery.
