Pedalling to victory; Partnership proves a success for cyclists.

TWELVE-months ago one of the most flourishing sports colleges on Merseyside joined forces with a famous local cycling club to promote the sport locally.

Cardinal Heenan SC and Liverpool Mercury CC started a Sport Unlimited programme, funded by Sport England, which introduced links and pathways that would enable children to take up cycling.

A year later both are celebrating the success of the scheme.

"So far the programme has increased the number of LMCC members," said Director of Sport Mark Greaves.

"We have also managed to purchase some top of the range Terry Dolan bikes for the youngsters to use in our year round cycling programme.

"We have also introduced a cycling proficiency programme for younger students to acquire road skills."

The partnership also received a major boost when they enlisted the help of former cycling internationals Phil Thomas, Vicky Thomas and Ricky Garcia, who train the boys on a weekly basis.
