Pearline, Jaikumar, Ed. Holidays, Festivals, and Celebrations of the World Dictionary: Fifth Edition. Omnigraphics, 2015. l,360p. $177. 978-0-7808-1362-5. Indices. Appendices. Biblio.
This revised and expanded fifth edition of a standard reference resource includes 250 new entries, and updates many of the 3,000 entries available in the previous edition of 2010. The main body of the work is an alphabetical list of worldwide holidays, festivals and celebrations. Each entry features a brief essay with essential cultural and historical background on the particular holiday or festival. Some entries can easily be found by name, for example: Burning Man Festival, Holy Thursday, Ramadan, Toronto International Film Festival. Several indices assist in finding entries not readily located by name, and special subject indices allow the researcher to identify holidays and festivals of a particular type, such as food-related, religious, or sporting. There is also a Chronological Index of Fixed Days and Events, and a dozen useful appendices on topics such as: Legal Holidays by State, Facts about Countries around the World, Legal Holidays by Country, and Tourism Information Sources. A classified, annotated bibliography describes the many sources consulted.
This hefty reference book is not specifically marketed to youth, but it is well-suited for school and public libraries, where it would be handy for class assignments and projects. However, in view of the high cost, the availability of much of this material elsewhere, and the very gradual accretion of new and updated information from one edition to the next, libraries already owning the third (2005) or fourth (2010) edition need not invest in each new edition.--Walter Hogan.
