Paul J. McMahon, 93.

WORCESTER Paul J. McMahon, 93, died Thursday morning, June 3, 2010 at UMass Memorial Medical Center, surrounded by his family. He leaves his beloved wife of 59 years, F. Ethel (Cavanaugh) McMahon.

Paul was born in Worcester on January 16, 1917. He was the son of Michael and Nora (Foley) McMahon. His sister, Mary E. Murphy, wife of Joseph M. Murphy of Florham Park, NJ predeceased him in 2004.

He graduated from Classical High School in 1934. His Bachelor of Arts degree is from the College of the Holy Cross, Class of 1938. He received his Master of Education degree from Fitchburg State College in 1940.

Paul was in the Army Air Force from 1943 to 1946. After serving his country, he continued his teaching and coaching career at Rutland High School. He met his wife, Ethel Cavanaugh, on the first day of school in September, 1946. Paul and Ethel married on August 19, 1950 and were looking forward to celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary this summer.

In 1947, Paul was elected to North High School as a Latin and Mathematics Teacher. He coached one very memorable year in Ice Hockey and eight victorious seasons in Track and Field.

Paul worked summers as the Worcester City-wide Playground Supervisor, overseeing 26 playgrounds, for 20 years from 1947 to 1967.

Paul taught religious education and served as a lector at St. Stephen's Church for 16 years.

In 1962, Paul became Assistant Principal at North High and subsequently transferred to the newly opened Burncoat Senior High School in 1964. In 1968, he became Supervisor of Secondary Schools in Worcester, a position he held until his retirement in 1981.

Paul was an active member in the Retired Men's Club of Greendale. He enjoyed playing golf in the Green Hill Golf League for 22 years. Paul was a Purple Night and belonged to Holy Cross Sodality.

He and Ethel traveled extensively during their retirement years and enjoyed many winter seasons in Florida.

Besides his wife, Paul leaves four children: Marie M. Deedy and her husband, Kevin, of Foxborough, MA; Ann M. Jenkins and her husband, John, of Clemmons, NC; Paul M. McMahon and his wife, Jennifer, of Amherst, NH; and Kathleen M. Stansky and her husband, Robert, of Weston, MA.

Paul was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed his many friends, neighbors, and extended family including many nieces and nephews. They will cherish the wonderful memories Paul has given them.

One of his greatest pleasures was being with his family and 17 grandchildren: Colleen and her husband, Jason Wilmoth; Kathryn and her husband, Jonathan Phillips, Meghan, and Kara Jenkins; Erin and her husband, Thomas Lee, Ryan, Shannon, and Cara Deedy; Michael, Gregory, Stephen, Joseph, and Caroline McMahon; Marya, Matthew, Edward, and Philip Stansky.

Calling hours are Sunday, June 6, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester. The funeral will be Monday, June 7 from the funeral home with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 25 Fales St. Worcester. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Worcester.
