Pat's the way to do it Darren!

DARREN PATTERSON'S obsession with playing for Northern Ireland sure impressed manager Lawrie McMenemy.

Big Mac admits he has never known a player so desperate to do well for his country.

He says: "It means everything to the lad. When I took over he was practically crying down the phone pleading with me not to forget about him.

"So I played him against Switzerland and he scored a goal. He also featured against Spain before the World Cup finals.

"He has proved to me he deserves to be part of the set up."

Delighted Patterson said: "I'm grateful to Lawrie for giving me a chance.

"Of course, I'd played before he arrived but mainly out of position.

"He has given me the chance of showing what I can do at centre half, the position I've always said is my best.

"The move to Dundee United has proved to be a good one. There are some really big games in Scotland against the likes of Celtic and Rangers.

"I've never felt better since my days at Crystal Palace. I went to Luton Town after that but it wasn't such a good move."
