Particulate matter and telomere length.

Shortened leukocyte telomere length (LTL) is a marker of cardiovascular risk that has been associated with long-term exposure to ambient particulate matter (PM). Whether short-term exposure to PM increases LTL has never been evaluated. Dioni et al. (p. 622) investigated the effects of acute exposure to metal-rich PM on blood LTL in 63 male steel workers with high PM exposure. All of the participants were free of cardiopulmonary disease or cancer, and all had been working in their current job positions for at least 1 year. The authors measured LTL, as well as mRNA expression and promoter DNA methylation of the telomerase catalytic enzyme gene [human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT), in blood samples obtained on the first day of a workweek and after 3 days of work and found that short-term exposure to PM was associated with a rapid increase in blood LTL. The LTL increase did not appear to be mediated by PM-related changes in hTERT expression and methylation.
