Park pairs success.

RIPPONDEN PARK'S Malcolm and Sue Griffiths won the Elland Bowling Association's Norman Nichol Memorial Mixed Pairs Trophy.

The pair won the competition, sponsored by Briggs Priestley Ltd, with a 15-6 victory over Roger Gray and Jean Twiddle (Kingston) at Kingston BC.

The final produced some excellent bowling, with the winners playing good accurate woods on a medium length pegging mark over the crown.

Opening up an early 6-2 lead, a couple of ends later, the victors scored a pair and then a panful of really good woods round the jack to lead 12-3, the next end the tables were turned with both Twiddle and Gray responding with three great woods.

The fight back was not to be as the Ripponden pair took the next three ends with singles to finish the game 15-6 The Griffiths had begun the day by beating Maroof Hussain and Linda Hogan (King Cross) by a score of 15-6, following up with another 15-10 victory over Ian and Heather Smith (Akroydon Vics), this being after fighting back from being well behind at 10-2 running out with a three, two fours and a pair.

Their quarter-final opponents Tracy Atkinson and her youngest son Ben (Laurel Crescent) started with a good three, the game proceeding with the scores tied at 4, 6 and 8 before the Griffiths took charge and ran out to win 15-8. In their semi-final against Alwin and Muriel Guide (West End) the game was nip and tuck as neither pair could establish a lead, the scores peeled at 5, 7 and 8 before the victors asserted themselves going to game by 15-9. Gray and Twiddle opened their day with a hard earned victory against Martin Greenwood and Bev Tinkler (Siddal Park) who were always trailing until drawing level at 11, before the victors took charge with a 15-12 success.

Their quarter-final opponents Michael Briggs and Hazel Garside (Brighouse Sports) were powerless to stop them in a runaway win by 15-5. The Kingston pair's semi-final opponents David Blackburn and Annice Copley (West End) proved to be made of sterner stuff, who after being behind 6-4 and later 11-6, began a fightback on a long raking mark, scoring a single, pair and three to take the lead 12-11.

Twiddle then bowled in, with Gray following suit with a pair before some decisive leads from Twiddle earned them a 15-13 success.
