Park life: Windsor mansion on the market at pounds 15,000 a month.

Anyone who can afford around pounds 15,000 a month will soon be able to rent a Georgian mansion once admired by both King George IV and King Edward VIII.

Grade II-listed Forest Lodge, set in Windsor Great Park, Berkshire, is in the middle of a pounds 1.5 million restoration project to preserve its fine period detail but will be ready for occupation in the autumn.

The eight-bedroom house features original stonework, elaborate plaster cornices and ceiling decoration, exquisite marble fireplaces, Venetian windows and a half-barrel vaulted hallway ceiling.

The pounds 5.5 million red-brick property, owned by the Crown Estate, came to the attention of George I in 1823, but the Treasury refused to stump up the then owner's pounds 20,000 asking price.

Some years later, however, the Duke of Wellington, the then Prime Minister, decided pounds 20,000 could be spared and the house, known at the time as Holly Grove, became the property of the Crown in 1829.

In 1937, King Edward VIII, who let it out to his equerry, Sir John Aird, changed the name of the house to Forest Lodge as he disliked Holly Grove.

Richard Murray Wells, of Smiths Gore, the London agents letting the house, said: 'This is a rare opportunity for someone to live in one of the Crown Estate's finest properties.

'Forest Lodge is a very substantial house in one of the loveliest settings in the country.

'It is convenient for the Guards Polo Club, Ascot, and only a short drive to Heathrow airport.'
