Pares is hailed; ROUND-UP.

ULTRA: John Pares' performance in the World and European 24-Hour Championships at the weekend helped Great Britain to sixth place in the global competition.

Pares, of Buckley Runners, ran 203.175km over the 24 hours to finish 116th overall of the 243 competitors in Holland.

Andy Smith, team manager for the GB 24-hour squad, said of Pares' performance: "His ability to dig deep and come back out for the team shows his true spirit and determination. It is not necessarily the distance one runs in an ultra race, but the way in which you can dig deep into your reserves and over-ride the pain to achieve greatness that impresses."

Emily Gelder, the women's winner of last year's Marathon Eryri, ran 212.213k to help GB's women's team to second in the European Championships and fourth in the Worlds.
