Parents working in opposite directions.

Byline: Maureen Messent

ACTRESS Halle Berry (white mother, black father) is peeved that her ex-lover and father of her illegitimate child (white, French-Canadian) considers the two-year-old to be white.

Berry bleated at a custody hearing that she "feels like the little girl is black". Her ex sulks whenever the child is referred to as black.

"I am a black woman," Berry shouted at one stage. "I don't want black people to feel I've abandoned them."

Quite. Didn't it occur to the proud-to-be-black Ms Berry that this unpleasantness could have been avoided had she ceased fancying a white man for leg-over situations.

The correct Maureen Messent

But why are these parents fighting over their daughter's colour, for God sake.

Does it matter?
