Mum and dad tell of TV success for their girl

Celebrity Love Island winner Jayne Middlemiss's parents today told of their joy.

After five weeks of fun, frolics and tears the Bedlington beauty was last night crowned winner of the hit reality show.

She scooped a share of pounds 100,000 after winning with nightclub-owner Fran Cosgrave.

Jayne, 34, pipped ex-Atomic Kitten singer Liz McClarnon to win.

And PR guru Max Clifford said her success could mean pounds 1m worth of TV deals.

At home in Bedlington, Jayne's retired parents Tom, 59, and Janet, 61, along with sister Allyson, 31, are waiting eagerly to hear from her.

Tom said: "It was great seeing her win and we definitely thought she'd have a chance. I was jumping up in the air and screaming last night and since we have had loads of phone calls off family and friends."

Jayne's time on the Fijian island will be best remembered for her crush on ex-footballer Lee Sharpe.

After declaring her love for him, she claimed they were just "brother and sister".

But a tearful diary room confession on her final night revealed her true feelings.

Tom added: "The romance has also been a bit surreal for Jayne, and I suppose she did like Lee.

"I don't think she is looking for love at the moment, I think it's just a case of if it comes it comes, but Lee seemed very nice and laid back.

"There was lots of flirting going on but it hardly could have been otherwise. I think the public voted for her because she is very humorous and has a great personality."

As Jayne's white Mini still sits on the family home's driveway, mum Janet said: "I think Jane liked Lee and I think it was very hard for her in there.

"She was smoking a lot and she doesn't tend to do that at home.

"She made a few drunken confessions, but we all knew she had had a few at the time.

"It was really funny when her Geordie accent was slipping out and it shows that she's proud of where she's from."

Jayne first hit the nation's screens as an extra in the Bill before becoming Mr Blobby's assistant on Noel Edmonds' Roadshow.

Then after landing a job as a researcher for GMTV, she was offered a screen test for pop magazine show the O Zone.

The show's popularity saw her shoot to fame and in 2001, she went stateside to film MTV show LA Pool Party with fellow presenters Lisa Snowdon and Tess Daly.

Mr Clifford said: "It's a new break through for her. If she gets a good team around her, then this thing could earn her pounds 1m in the next year.

"What this does is gives her a window of opportunity and in the next couple of months, there should be some good offers for her in TV work and maybe advertising."
