Parent to Parent Programs.

Parent to Parent (P-P) programs provide informational and emotional support to parents who have a child, adolescent, or adult family member with special needs. P-P programs offer an important connection for a parent who is seeking support for a specific disability issue, by matching him or her with a trained "veteran" parent who has already "been there." Because the two parents share so many common concerns and interests, the support given and received is often uniquely meaningful. Such one-to-one relationships provide more intimate and individualized support than can be found in most traditional parent support groups.

P-P programs have been providing one-to-one matches for more than 25 years. The major components are screening and training of veteran parents, careful matches based on family and disability issues, and follow-up support for each match. Many P-P programs also offer a range of other activities including parent groups for education and support, social events, resource libraries, and services for other family members.

Some states have a Statewide P-P program that offers training and technical assistance to local programs. These Statewide P-P programs often have extensive computerized databases that allow them to make a Statewide match when an appropriate local match cannot be found.

INTERNATIONAL PARENT TO PARENT CONFERENCE

Every other year, parents, P-P program directors, and other professionals in the families and disability field, gather at the International Parent to Parent Conference. The Tenth International Parent to Parent Conference will be held in Reno, Nevada May 5-7, 2000. For further information, please contact: Nevada Parent Network, College of Education/285, Reno, NV 89557-0082; telephone: (775) 784-4921.

USING THIS DIRECTORY

This directory contains P-P programs that provided at least both an address and a telephone number. (Unless indicated, all telephone numbers are for voice only.) Statewide P-P programs have an asterisk (*) by their names, and local programs that are affiliated with the Statewide program are not listed separately, and gave EXCEPTIONAL PARENT magazine permission for contact information to be included in the EXCEPTIONAL PARENT Resource Guide. If you are looking for a local program in a state that has a Statewide program, please contact the Statewide program for contact information. If you do not find a local program in your community, or if you wish to add or make revisions to this list, please contact the Beach Center on Families and Disability, 3111 Haworth Hall, University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS 66045; telephone: (785) 864-7600 (voice/TDD); fax: (785) 864-7605.

When available, World Wide Web sites and e-mail addresses have been included. Web sites are listed with the standard http:// before each. E-mail addresses are indicated by the symbol, ??. (Unless otherwise indicated, all telephone numbers are for voice only.)
