Paralegal Perspectives: PAR supports the Legal Aid Society of Rochesters Ed Orlando Fund.

Byline: Commentary:

Last month on Sept. 30, the Paralegal Association of Rochester, Inc. (PAR) held its second annual charity golf tournament par for PAR at Shadow Lake golf course. The weather was absolutely beautiful for the 34 golfers who participated, including PAR members, PAR board members and PAR sponsors. The charitable recipient of the proceeds of the event was the Legal Aid Society of Rochester, specifically the Ed Orlando Fund. On Oct. 16, I had the privilege of attending the monthly staff meeting for Legal Aid Society of Rochester, Inc., where I presented Director Carla Palumbo with a check for $1,000 on behalf of PAR. It was a surprise to the staff and the response was one of excitement and appreciation. In my discussions with Carla and others, I have learned that Ed Orlando was attorney with the Legal Aid Society and was a law guardian for children. Unfortunately, he passed away in 200. From what I have learned, Mr. Orlando was a very loving and compassionate person who was devoted to protecting childrens rights. The Ed Orlando fund was established to carry on that legacy in his memory. The fund is used to purchase items for children in need, such as a Christmas present for a child that might not have ever received one before, a new baseball mitt or a brand-new pair of shoes. Sometimes it is a giving gesture that can make a difference in a childs life and, I am glad that PAR and the Legal Aid Society connected together for this wonderful cause. This previous week, on Oct. 12-15, PAR board members Deborah Wilcox-Mabry and Bobbi Ahearn attend the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA) Convention in New Orleans. NFPA hosts a convention each year consisting of policy meetings, regional NFPA meetings and CLE offerings. Please look for more detailed information to come in a future article. PAR will be holding its 13th annual kick-off dinner and auction this evening at the Brook Lea County Club. Please visit our website at www.rochesterparalegal.org and our Facebook page (Paralegal Association of Rochester) for more information about PAR and upcoming events. Jane M. Gorski is president of the Paralegal of Association of Rochester, Inc. (PAR) and an estates and trusts paralegal at Woods Oviatt Gillman LLP.
