Pakistan summons Afghan envoy

PAN Monitor - Aug 1, 2008 - 11:43

KABUL (PAN): Hours after a bomb explosion outside its consulate in Herat City, Pakistan summoned Afghan Ambassador Mohammad Anwar Anwarzai to the Foreign Office in Islamabad to convey it concern over the security of its diplomats.

The Foreign Ministry lodged a strong protest with the envoy and condemned the explosion that left three people injured. Islamabad chided the Afghan government for not being serious about the security of its diplomats based in Afghanistan.

In a statement, the Foreign Office said: The government of Pakistan holds the Afghanistan responsible for the safety and security of its personnel in its embassy in Kabul and consulates in Herat, Kandahar, Jalalabad and Mazar-i-Sharif. We hope that the government of Afghanistan will take its responsibility seriously.

For its part, the Afghan government condemned the bombing in the western province, saying such criminal acts would further strengthen the resolve of both the countries to fight terrorism. The Foreign Affairs Ministry in Kabul said such "gloomy acts of terrorism" were inconsistent with the "high values of the civilised world like peace, security, human rights, democracy and social welfare."

The blast in Herat City shattered glasses of a security post outside the diplomatic mission and nearby shops, according to a local police officer. Dr. Barkatullah Muhammadi, head of the Emergency Department at the Herat Hospital, said one security guard and a woman were brought to hospital after the blast. Both were discharged after being administered first aid.
