Pakistan quake kills 16 people, injures over 100 others.
ISLAMABAD, Oct 26 (KUNA) -- At least 16 people were killed and over 100 others injured in the strong earthquake of magnitude 8.1 on the Richter scale which jolted parts of Pakistan on Monday. According to reports, many buildings and houses in the northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province collapsed due to strong tremors, killing at least 16 people and wounding hundreds other. At least 10 people were killed in Peshawar city, two people were killed in Charsadda, two in Bajaur Agency and two in Dir area of KPK. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has directed all federal, civil, military and provincial agencies to declare an immediate alert and mobilize all resources to ensure the security of citizens of Pakistan. The epicenter of the quake was Hindukush region and its depth was 193 kilometers. The earthquake lasted for over one minute spreading panic among people making them rush out of their homes. According to United States Geological Survey, another earthquake of magnitude 7.6 also struck in northeastern Afghanistan. The quake was 196 km deep and centered 82 km southeast of Feyzabad in a remote area of Afghanistan in the Hindu Kush mountain range. (Pick up previous) sbk.mt
