Pakistan : Jam Kamal Khan visits PMDC office.

Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Resources, Jam Kamal Khan accompanied by Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources and Director General (Mineral) visited Head Office of Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation (PMDC) here today.

The Managing Director, PMDC briefed the Minister about various projects, activities and performance of the corporation. PMDC is a Federal Government owned Mineral Sector entity aiming to explore, develop, mine and market coal, salt and other minerals in the country under licenses and leases acquired from the provinces. PMDC is the operator of the world s second largest salt mine located at Khewra District Jhelum, producing about 1.4 million tons of salt every year. PMDC produces about 500,000 tons of coal per annum from its different mines. Besides, PMDC is engaged as a Joint Venture partners with Chinese Company, MCC and Government of Balochistan in developing deposits of lead and Zinc at Duddar in District Lasbella, Balochistan.

The Minister discussed in detail all activities of PMDC including production and sale of salt and coal. He observed that there was still a lot of room for PMDC to further expand its operations and activities in order to contribute to the development of mineral sector.

He stated that immense opportunities to explore and develop minerals Sector of the Country exist and PMDC can play its due role in development of the sector. He advised for further increase in the profitability of the Corporation by initiating new mineral development projects and to increase export of salt to earn foreign exchange for the country. He directed the management to promote tourism through various means of publicity and promotion for its world class asset-the Khewra Salt Mines. PMDC needed to further improve facilities of its tourist resort at Khewra in order to attract more national and foreign visitors.

He also stressed the need for enhancing capacity building of manpower of PMDC to achieve desired results. He added that difficulties in getting prospecting / exploration licenses and mining leases for mineral projects may be referred to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources so that way forward could be evolved and concerned provinces be approached accordingly.
