Solutions for the Energy Crisis

SHORT TERM

(UPTO 1 YEAR)

1. Control Corruption

2. Appoint competent and professional management; improve governance

3. Eliminate Circular Debt--Take them on Government books

4. Invest in efficient transmission. Start replacing outdated distribution systems

5. Educate and control public to change spoilt habits e.g. close shops early at night

MEDIUM TERM

(UPTO 5 YEARS)

1. Launch Pakistan--Iran Gas Pipeline (4,000 MW Power Generation Annually)

2. Construct third Nuclear Power Plant at Chashma with China's assistance (1,000 MW) Current Capacity: 425 MW

3. Utilize Coal for power generation (Thar Coal Power Project)

4. Aggresively focus on development of alternate energy (Wind Energy, Solar Energy, Agricultural Biomass)

5. Build Hydro Power projects aggresively (e.g. Bunji, Dasu Dam, Diamer Bhasha Dam, Darawat Dam, Kurram Tangi)

6. Encourage setting up of power plants by private sector

LONG TERM

(6 TO 10 YEARS)

1. Reduce tariff / cost of electricity consumption to become competitive

2. Reduce proportion of power generation of thermal

3. Increase proportion of hydel and alternate energy to 80%

4. Provide proper relief to lower income groups
