Pakistan's Zardari initiates legal action against author.
Zardari serves legal notice to Sadruddin Hashwani, saying the writer had made baseless, incorrect, misleading and frivolous allegations in his book Truth Always Prevails.
Dubai - Former Pakistani president and co-chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party Asif Ali Zardari has, through his legal representative, served two legal notices to the writer and publisher of Truth Always Prevails in Dubai and New Delhi under the defamation laws of the UAE and India respectively.
The autobiography, written by the founder-chairman of Hashoo Group, Sadruddin Hashwani, gives insights into the political structure of Pakistan, the successive governments, the military rulers and their attitude towards the business community.
"We have served two separate legal notices to the writer of the book, Sadruddin Hashwani, in Dubai and publisher, Penguin Books, in New Delhi for making baseless, incorrect, misleading and frivolous allegations against my client in the book," said Ashish Mehta, founder and managing partner of Ashish Mehta & Associates, a law firm that operates in the UAE and India.
Mehta said the writer has not provided any evidence in support of the "false allegations" made in the book, which was launched in Dubai on February 19 this year. "The baseless allegation has caused mental torture, harassment and humiliation to my client ... We have claimed Dh1 billion (in) compensation in the notice served to the writer and the publisher," Mehta told Khaleej Times.
"It is clearly stated in the notice that my client will donate to charity any amount of compensation received from the writer and publisher." Hashwani confirmed that Zardari has filed a civil case against him in Pakistan for damaging his reputation through his autobiography.
"Yes, Zardari has filed a case in the court against me for the damage my book has caused to his reputation. However, let me ask him 'what reputation do you have that has been damaged by my book'," Hashwani said in a statement to Khaleej Times.
"I am pleased that Truth Always Prevails proved to be an FIR against corruption and corrupt mafia. It speaks for the nation and younger generation to save their country from the evil forces. I shall not change a single word written in my book and will continue defending the case, which is a case for Pakistan now."
