PYRAMID TECHNOLOGY AND MICRO FOCUS ANNOUNCE ENHANCED PARTNERSHIP AND NEW PRODUCTS FOR DOWNSIZING EFFORTS

SAN JOSE, Calif., May 24 /PRNewswire/ -- At the 1993 Micro Focus User Conference, Pyramid Technology Corp. (NASDAQ: PYRD) and Micro Focus announced their strategic data center partnership, an enhancement of their existing OEM agreement. The partnership will offer new and enhanced Micro Focus COBOL products for Pyramid's open systems data center-class servers, providing a broader range of choices and greater flexibility for customers who are downsizing mainframe applications or offloading applications from mainframe systems.
The new agreement extends Micro Focus' cross-platform software solution onto Pyramid's MIServer ES (enterprise server) hardware product line. The initial product offering will be Micro Focus COBOL/2 for UNIX on DC(TM)/OSx(R), providing a commercial COBOL application development and execution environment customized to Pyramid's proprietary DC/OSx operating system. Other server and personal computer software products will be introduced later in the year.
It is estimated that more than 85 percent of today's mainframe legacy applications are written in COBOL. The Micro Focus COBOL language system supports a wide range of mainframe COBOL dialects, making it the ideal choice for data center managers planning to downsize or migrate legacy applications from IBM mainframes to Pyramid's open systems servers.
Kansas City Power and Light (NYSE: KLT), a major midwestern U.S. utility company, is using Micro Focus COBOL/2 for UNIX on DC/OSx to downsize from a Unisys mainframe to a distributed client/server architecture, employing Pyramid MIServers as the back-end to its company-wide PC network. "We want to protect our COBOL investment and like the Micro Focus software for its portability across a broad range of hardware platforms, from data center to desktop," said Forest Grapes, manager, technical services at KCP&L.
"Micro Focus offers the industry-standard UNIX COBOL compiler, and is a natural partner in our Open Data Center Alliance, which is dedicated to meet the downsizing requirements of today's data center customer," said Deborah Stanley, Pyramid vice president of marketing.
"Due to the high growth projected for the UNIX server-based rightsizing of mission-critical applications, we recognize the importance of growing strategic relationships with key vendors in this segment of the market," said Peter Katz, Micro Focus vice president of marketing. "With Pyramid's focus on providing powerful open systems data center-class servers, the Micro Focus client/server solution on Pyramid is an ideal choice for IS professionals planning to rightsize their legacy applications to a UNIX environment."
Pyramid's Open Data Center strategy addresses the company's intent to deliver superior technology and added-value partnerships and services to the open systems data center customer. In addition to Micro Focus, Pyramid has announced strategic data center partnerships with Comdisco, Integris and Electronic Data Systems (EDS), as well as broad technology and distribution agreements with European computer giants Siemens Nixdorf, International Computers Ltd. (ICL), Bull HN Information Systems and Fujitsu/ICL Australia.
"As organizations move to robust distributed architectures, the combination of high-end systems and reliable development tools can yield significant productivity improvements," said Andrew Mahon, senior analyst, advanced software development for New Science Associates. "Micro Focus technology has proven to be a success for alternative computing platforms. By offering this familiar and proven technology, Pyramid is making a smart move."
