PYRAMID TECHNOLOGY AND ICL PLC ANNOUNCE JOINT TECHNOLOGY AGREEMENT

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Pyramid Technology (NASDAQ: PYRD) and ICL PLC, a leading European information technology supplier, today announced an agreement under which ICL has licensed Pyramid's core systems technology to develop high end System V Release 4 (SVR4) SPARC-based UNIX systems. The new multiprocessor UNIX computers will extend ICL's existing range of DRS 6000 commercial UNIX systems.
The agreement gives ICL access to Pyramid's leading high performance system architecture and software technology, high-bandwidth bus, and consulting services.
"We have chosen Pyramid's bus technology to extend the range of our SPARC-based UNIX systems in recognition of the growth in the high end UNIX market from the mid-1990s," said Mike Coote, director of ICL Mid Range Systems Platform Group. "Our decision was based upon Pyramid's proven performance in the high end UNIX server market."
In addition, the agreement also confirms an arrangement whereby ICL will remarket existing Pyramid MIServers in targeted situations where there is near-term customer demand for large-scale UNIX systems in the United Kingdom and worldwide. "We have found Pyramid systems are extremely competitive high end offerings that meet some customers' immediate needs for very large UNIX systems and are a natural complement to our SVR4-based product line," said Coote. "The fact that ICL and Pyramid are both committed to an SVR4-based operating system is a significant added benefit."
"We're pleased that ICL has selected our systems architecture as the basis for their future high end products and is selling with us today at the top end of the UNIX market. We believe this is an important endorsement of our technology, our demonstrated ability to deliver high end systems, and our value as a significant partner," said Ross Bott, Pyramid vice president and chief technical officer. "Based upon ICL's large market share, we expect our relationship to be a very beneficial mutual venture."
"Both the agreements are representative of Pyramid's strategy to focus upon delivering technology, partnerships and services to the open data center, a corporate strategy announced in October 1992," added Bott.
