PYRAMID INTRODUCES SERVICEEXPERT(TM)AUTOMATIC SYSTEM MONITORING AND ANALYSIS REPORTING SYSTEM

SAN JOSE, Calif., April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Pyramid Technology Corp. (NASDAQ: PYRD) today introduced ServiceExpert(TM), a continuous monitoring and analysis reporting system that sets a new standard for automated system support. A heuristics-based software technology, ServiceExpert allows system administrators to proactively identify and respond to early signs of potential hardware errors and system software problems. ServiceExpert is available for all mainframe-class Pyramid MIServer T, S and ES systems covered by a Pyramid maintenance agreement.
Helping to control data center expenses, ServiceExpert performs many of the functions of a full-time systems administrator at a fraction of the cost. ServiceExpert saves critical management time, minimizes unscheduled maintenance and increases system availability. ServiceExpert analyzes large amounts of system performance data, producing easy-to-read reports that allow systems administrators to quickly evaluate maintenance requirements and make proactive decisions. By eliminating labor-intensive data collection and analysis, administrators can concentrate on other system management issues.
"The plea of system administrators for network management relief is finally being heard," said Robert Johnson, associate director, Software Support Services, Worldwide Services Group of Dataquest/Ledgeway. "New services, like ServiceExpert, represent a turning point from 'features for features' sake' to meet the real-world needs for automation, analysis and control."
"Because of the mission-critical nature of our data center customer's operations, Pyramid has a responsibility to deliver solutions that optimize system management and availability," said Tom Meyer, vice president of Pyramid's Customer Services division. "ServiceExpert represents yet another example of how Pyramid is living up to its commitment to provide top-quality technology, partners and services to our open systems data center customers."
ServiceExpert is applicable across the broad range of Pyramid platforms, from those with smaller system configurations to those running the largest UNIX databases in the world. To date, the mission- critical expert software has been employed by such major users as Northern Telecom and DHL Airways Inc. (Americas).
Responding to the increasingly diverse open systems computing environment, in addition to operating on Pyramid MIServers, ServiceExpert also supports and monitors most UNIX-based systems in a multi-vendor computer network. For over three years, ServiceExpert has been monitoring a mixed computing environment that includes Pyramid MIServer systems at Target Mail, a division of Canadian Market Images. Alan Levine, chief operating officer of Canadian Market Images, said, "We've been running ServiceExpert for two business requirements: Long- term capacity planning and short-term exception management. If you have an expert administrator who has all the free time in the world and nothing to do, then it's possible you might not need ServiceExpert. Otherwise, you do."
 ServiceExpert Overview
ServiceExpert consists of two primary software components: Monitoring software residing on a customer's MIServer and an analyzer installed on an MIServer system in Pyramid's Corporate Customer Support Center (CCSC) in San Jose.
At a customer site, ServiceExpert's monitor software triggers standard UNIX utilities to gather information about overall system status and user-specified parameters, performing audits and management activities. The resulting statistical data is compiled into a series of compressed magnetic log files which are transmitted to the analyzer software in Pyramid's CCSC where they are compared against defined standards and analyzed for deviations and exceptions.
System status, performance and integrity reports are electronically generated and transmitted back to the designated system administrator at the customer site on a daily basis. If an urgent situation occurs, it is identified by ServiceExpert, Pyramid's CCSC is immediately notified and a problem resolution action plan is jointly developed between Pyramid and the customer.
ServiceExpert also produces security, network statistics, application support and long-term trend reports that enable system administrators to make informed capacity planning management decisions.
In specific, ServiceExpert tracks UNIX and Pyramid-specific parameters, including:
 -- Disk resource monitoring
-- File and directory size changes
 -- File permissions management
 -- Log file archival management
 -- "Junk" file management
 -- Archive data compression
 -- Back-up implementation and monitoring
