PYRAMID ANNOUNCES HIGH SPEED BACK UP PRODUCTS
 FOR LARGE SCALE RDBMS APPLICATIONS

Pyramid FastTRAC(TM) and Database Express Backup(TM) improve online backup capabilities eight fold
SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Pyramid Technology (NASDAQ: PYRD) today announced, as part of its ongoing "Availability Assurance(TM)" program, two new software products that provide customers with high-speed automated backup capabilities. Pyramid FastTRAC and Database Express Backup improve backup performance by as much as a factor of eight, while providing increased data protection and ease of administration.
Edward W. Scott Jr., Pyramid executive vice president, commented, "Slow backup has been a historic problem with UNIX(R). In fact, our customers have told us that lack of adequate backup strategies is a key barrier to building large database applications. Recognizing this problem, Pyramid is again leading the industry in enhancing the UNIX environment for large OLTP environments. These two new products exemplify Pyramid's availability assurance--ensuring that customers can run and administer their critical applications in a cost-effective and productive manner."
Pyramid FastTRAC provides a parallel tape array software technology for Pyramid MIServer computers that links multiple devices into a single virtual drive and provides up to eight times the throughput of standard backup utilities. It supports from one to eight drives in a variety of formats -- 8 mm, DAT, QIC or 3480 compatible.
Database Express Backup combines the benefits of Pyramid FastTRAC technology with an intelligent RDBMS interface integrated with the ORACLE(R), INFORMIX(R), INGRES(R), SYBASE(R) AND UNIFY 2000(R) relational databases. It automates and simplifies the administration of large relational database backups, eliminating data loss from manual error and media damage.
The time needed to back up a 10 gigabyte database using a standard IBM 3480 tape drive is approximately one hour. The time required to perform the same backup on a Pyramid MIServer(TM), with and without Pyramid FastTRAC with various is listed below:
 Tape Format w/o FastTRAC w/FastTRAC
 DAT (183 kbs) 15.1 hrs 1.9 hrs
 8 mm (500 kbs) 5.6 hrs 0.7 hrs
 3440 (1.5 Mb/sec) 1.9 hrs 0.25 hrs

Pyramid FastTRAC and Database Express Backup are targeted at customers with large databases, or those that have a limited time window for completing the database backup process. together, the two products provide increased backup performance, simplified administration and increased data protection and availability.
Performance and capacity: Pyramid FastTRAC speeds backup performance by transparently striping back up data across multiple physical tape drives. As additional tape drives are added, backup speed and capacity increase in a linear fashion. Database Express Backup further improves performance by backing up multiple databases in parallel to multiple tape arrays. Incremental backups are also supported to protect recent updates while reducing the frequency of time-consuming full backups.
Administration: Database Express Backup provides a menu-based interface which prompts the administrator to select the databases to backup, choose tape drives and create backup schedules. It then automatically reads data from the required tables and manages all tape output, eliminating administrative errors. Database Express Backup maintains a history of full and incremental backup to enable automated recovery. Pyramid FastTRAC automatically generates and checks tape lables, issues tape mount requests, and provides tools to define virtual tape devices and monitor status.
Reliability: Pyramid FastTRAC increases data reliability through use of a parity tape, allowing data recovery if any tape is unreadable or missing, or if any drive is damaged. Database Express Backup supports online backup facilities provided by the RDBMS vendors, enabling continued processing while backups are in process.
"Using Pyramid FastTRAC with three tape drives, we have reduced the time to back up our 10 GB ORACLE database by two-thirds," noted Paul MacPherson, database administrator for Trimark Investment Management, "As a result, we are now able to run two backups per day to protect critical transactions. We are looking forward to using Database Express Backup as well, to automate our backups and prevent administrative errors." AVAILABILITY AND PRICING
Commercial shipments for Pyramid FastTRAC will begin in February 1992. Shipments for Database Express Backup on the MIServer T Series will begin in second quarter, 1992. Support for the MIServer S Series will be in the second half of 1992.
Both products work with major disk drive devices, including Tandberg 3660, Wangtek 5525 ES, Pyramid 3440, and any tape drive supported by MIServer systems.
Pricing for Pyramid FastTRAC starts at $10,000. Database Express Backup will be offered as a special option to Pyramid FastTRAC for database customers. PYRAMID TECHNOLOGY
