PYRAMID ANNOUNCES DATA CENTER CLUSTER SOLUTION
 WITH ORACLE7 PARALLEL SERVER
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Pyramid Technology Corp. (NASDAQ: PYRD) today announced the availability of its Data Center Cluster offering combining Oracle Corp.'s ORACLE7 Cooperative Server with the Parallel Server option and Pyramid's MIServer(R) platform. The combination of Pyramid and Oracle technologies allow users running applications on multiple Pyramid MIServers to access a single, shared ORACLE database.
"The Pyramid Data Center Cluster offering delivers a high- performance fault resilient implementation of ORACLE7 parallel Server," said Jim Sha, vice president, UNIX products division for Oracle. "This will be a key differentiator for Pyramid with Oracle customers who have mission critical requirements."
Pyramid has developed a number of unique technologies that provide the foundation for the ORACLE7 Parallel Server for mainframe class systems. The combination delivers an unsurpassed approach to open system clustering. The components, part of Pyramid's Data Center Cluster solution, include a fault resilient distributed lock manager, a high-speed system interconnect and a shared disk subsystem with mirrored disk array capabilities.
Pyramid's fault resilient distributed lock manager coordinates transaction processing across multiple systems and allows for uninterrupted database processing should one system fail. In the event of a failure, users on the surviving systems continue executing transactions uninterrupted while the failed system can be brought back on line with minimal disruption and full data integrity. Users on the failed node can log in to a surviving node until the failed node is again fully operational.
"Today's announcement is part of Pyramid's overall strategy for 'Opening the Data Center(TM)' -- a concept that incorporates transitioning users off mainframes or other proprietary systems and on to open systems," said Edward W. Scott, Jr., executive vice president for Pyramid. "Now customers can combine the advantages of outstanding price performance with high availability for critical on-line transaction processing applications. For commercial applications, Pyramid extends the data center to encompass the advantages of open systems."
Pricing for the enabling technology in Pyramid's Data Center Cluster solution starts at $20,000 per node. The Data Center Cluster solution will be available in December 1992.
Founded in 1981 and headquartered in San Jose, Calif., Pyramid Technology manufactures, markets and supports the MIServer line of high-performance, high-availability open system servers to the commercial marketplace. Pyramid's systems run the largest UNIX-based relational databases in the world, and are based on a symmetric multiprocessor architecture that combines an enhanced UNIX operating system with reduced instruction set computing (RISC) technology. Pyramid MIServers offer from 10 to nearly 700 MIPS, deliver hundreds of transactions-per-second, and can effectively support thousands of concurrent users.
