PYRAMID AND UNIFY ACHIEVE RECORD BENCHMARK RESULTS
468 Transactions Per Second Achieved in TPC Benchmark B
Performed on MIPS-based MIServer S Running UNIX SVR4
SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Pyramid Technology Corp. (Booth No. 2631) (NASDAQ: PYRD) and Unify Corp. (Booth No. 2553) today announced record benchmark results of 468 transactions per second (tps) in an audited TPC Benchmark B (TPC-B) performed on the Pyramid MIServer(TM) S Series running the UNIFY(TM) 2000 relational database management system (RDBMS). This number represents a new level of performance for commercial UNIX(R) Systems. The MIServer S Series is a MIPS R3000-based system that runs UNIX System V Release 4 (SVR4), and provides the power and capacity capable of handling mainframe- level processing requirements.
The benchmark, audited by PERFORMANCE Metrics Inc. of Los Gatos, Calif., was completed on Pyramid's MIServer 12S with 12 processors running the UNIFY 2000 release 2. The MIServer/UNIFY 2000 combination achieved a cost per TPC-B of $5,941 based on a five-year cost of ownership.
Pyramid and Unify originally undertook the benchmark based on a specific customer requirement, but upon seeing the significant potential for performance achievements, continued efforts to the full TPC Benchmark B level. The superior results achieved indicate the competitive viability of the SVR4 operating system among the offerings in today's UNIX marketplace.
Commenting on the results of the benchmark, Deborah Stanley, vice president of Pyramid's Database Division said, "The outstanding results of this benchmark clearly reinforce the leadership position Pyramid has in providing powerful, yet cost-effective, systems. Databases, and the processing power they require to run most effectively are extremely important to Pyramid's customers. We are committed to working closely withy Unify and our other database partners to continue delivering the high-level OLTP and price performance that make our customers successful."
"UNIFY 2000 is one of the best kept secrets in the industry and we intend to change that," said Nico Nierenberg, Unify's president. "We are committed to providing a powerful, cost-effective database and, as demonstrated by the results with the Pyramid S Series, UNIFY 2000 is the performance leader."
The Pyramid S Series is also available as the System 7000R3 from NCR, the Networked Computing Resource of AT&T. TPC BENCHMARK B
The TPC Benchmark B was developed by the Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC), a group of leading hardware and software manufacturers including Pyramid, dedicated to the development of objective, industry-wide performance metrics in the area of transaction processing.
The TPC Benchmarks have been used by many major hardware and database companies and are considered a consistent means of measuring database performance. The benchmark establishes stringent guidelines for the measurement of transaction performance consisting of a simple deposit or withdrawal of cash from a bank account. Performance is measured in an update-intensive database environment characterized by significant disk input/output (I/O), moderate system and application execution time and transaction integrity. The TPC-B benchmark also defines rigorous cost of ownership standards for the calculation of price/performance. The total system cost includes all hardware and software as well as 60 months of maintenance. PYRAMID TECHNOLOGY CORP.
