PYCHOLOGIST SAYS CLINTON'S 'CHILL OUT' REMARK INSULTS CALIFORNIANS
LOS ANGELES, March 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is being issued by Robert R. Butterworth, Ph.D.:
When Presidential candidate Bill Clinton turned to Jerry Brown during a political debate in Dallas last night and said, "Jerry, chill out, you're from California," Clinton continued to perpetuate the myth that Californians are laid-back, stress-free folks who should not be taken as seriously as their counterparts from other parts of the U.S.
This according to California psychologist and researcher, Robert R. Butterworth, Ph.D., who is tired of people making fun of Californians. Butterworth believes this off-hand remark made by Clinton could hurt his electoral chances in the California Primary in June. "It shows a insensitivity to the hardships that the people of California are experiencing as a result of the recession's impact on the Golden State. I'm sure that Governor Clinton, who is from the southern part of the U.S., is aware of the stereotypes associated with being a Southerner, yet he seems to be insensitive to our own feelings."
Butterworth, originally from the East who has been a California resident since 1976, is not surprised at Clinton's remark. "It's amazing, no matter where I travel in the U.S., there is the perception in the rest of the country about California -- regardless of high unemployment statistics, crowded freeways, gang killing and expensive housing -- that we're laid back, stress-free folks existing on organic foods, astrology and jacuzzis."
Butterworth also encounters this stereotype by the media. "Reporters that call me from out of state -- they're always afraid to call me before 10 a.m. California time. I guess they think I'm still in bed sleeping."
Butterworth is president and co-director of Contemporary Psychology Associates Inc., a private counseling and research firm in Los Angeles.
