PVC heat stabilizers: product lines reviewed.


Manufactures a complete line of metallic-based products. Company's Interstab and Stanclere lines of stabilizers have been formulated to satisfy a wide range of processing techniques including calendering, extrusion, injection molding, and various plastisol operations.

Barium/cadmium/zinc stabilizers for general-purpose flexible PVC applications are offered. These relatively odorless stabilizers reportedly provide exceptional initial color, as well as excellent heat and light stability. Air-release and dry-blending characteristics are said to be excellent, as is resistance to viscosity buildup and plateout.

A noncadmium-containing series of Interstab products is also available to satisfy a wide range of processing requirements. They are efficient liquid barium-zinc complexes that impart exceptional thermal and dynamic stability.

Company also produces a complete series of high-performance organotin stabilizers for rigid PVC under the Stanclere name. They reportedly offer excellent long-term heat stability and early color control, plus improved dynamics, and are available in liquid or solid form, either mercaptide or sulfur-free. These include a unique series of estertins for pipe, siding, FDA bottles and other rigid applications. They are said to give cost/performance superior to other organotins.

Nontoxic calcium/zinc stabilizers are offered for food-contact PVC. These are especially designed for rigid or flexible compounds and are available in solid, paste and liquid form. They are generally used with phosphite chelators and epoxy secondary plasticizers.

Company's organophosphite auxiliary stabilizers are designed for both FDA-sanctioned and general-purpose uses. Major advantages reportedly include improved early-color control and long-term stability.


Offers heat and light stabilizer systems in concentrate form. Heat-stabilizer compositions for rigid vinyl house siding and contour shapes are available in multifunctional concentrates.

A complete line of low-cost, liquid organization stabilizers for PVC is offered. CC-7711, CC-7711A and CC-7712 for rigid pipe and profiles are said to show excellent cost-performance. CC-101-110 and CC-101FC are products with reportedly superior cost-performance and excellent color hold for high-quality injection molding. CC-1015M is designed for siding and window profiles. CC-11 can be used in many processes but is particularly recommended for high-gloss sheet extrusion. For general-purpose rigid PVC bottles and containers, company recommends its CC-400 series. Where nonsulfuric-containing products are desired, company recommends its CC-100 series.


Offers Irgastab T-265 octyltin mercaptide for food-grade PVC, such as bottles. Irgastab T-634 tin carboxylate is said to be particularly effective when used with a light stabilizer in dark PVC siding.


Offers EPIstatic lead stabilizers for PVC, including tribasic lead sulfate, basic lead silico-sulfate, and dibasic lead phthalate. These materials are also available with organophilic surface modification to improve dispersion and reduce energy requirements during processing. Nondusting grades are also offered. EPIstatic products are used as the primary stabilizers in both rigid and flexible PVC and in PVC foams. Their stabilization properties and efficiency are due in large part to a higher specific surface than other similar products.


A complete line of organotin stabilizers is offered for rigid PVC. Thermolite 175, 175C, 310 and 310C are liquid organic stabilizers. Thermolite System 4 is a multifunctional stabilizer-lubricant recommended for PVC pipe extrusion. Thermolite 176, based on a newly developed tin technology, is a part-for-part replacement for Thermolite 175C and Thermolite 310C. Superior cost/performance, color hold, and odor are among Thermolite 176's reported advantages.

Thermolite T-133 and T-137 are suggested for injection molding, while T-137, T-34, and T-31 Super are offered for siding and profiles. Thermolite T-149 is designed for foam profiles. Thermolite 31 is used in every process (profile, sheet, pipe), as well as any PVC or CPVC polymer or copolymer.

For rigid PVC containers and extruded sheet, company recommends Thermolite-31, 66 and 108, depending on formulation and equipment variables. New general-purpose bottle stabilizers with improved cost/performance are in development.

Thermolite-350 and other customized organotin maleate stabilizers are recommended for calendered rigid PVC film/sheet where resistance to sulfide staining is required. Tin mercaptides are available for applications not requiring sulfide stain protection.

A new line of radiation and heat stabilizers for PVC medical devices and packaging is said to offer resistance to color degradation and loss of physical properties upon exposure to gamma irradiation.

Thermolite 831 and 813 remain the major stabilizers for use in food-grade bottle and sheet applications. New octyltins based on a mono-octyltin derivative and approved by FDA are also available.


A full range of Therm-Chek mixed-metal heat stabilizers are available for the entire range of rigid and flexible PVC applications and processes. An increasing range of noncadmium mixed-metal liquid, powder or paste heat stabilizers is available and gaining commercial acceptance in various flooring, wall covering, packaging, and automotive applications.

A specialty line of Therm-Chek organotin stabilizers is offered for many PVC, ABS/PVC, and other polymer blend applications.


Lead stabilizers for PVC include lead sulfates, phthalates, carbonates and co-precipitate complex types--all in lubricated and nonlubricated forms. Specific areas of use are wire and cable, rigid and flexible profiles, conduit, nonpotable pipe, foam, rigid and flexible sheet, or moldings, plastisols, organosols and weather-resistant applications.


Produces plasticizers and PVC-based concentrates of various heat stabilizers.


Offers calcium/zinc heat stabilizers in its Stabiol line. Stabiol calcium/zinc heat stabilizers are well suited for PVC rigid packaging containers intended for food-contact applications such as bottles for drinking water.


Offers a line of PVC stabilizers, including barium/cadmium/zinc phosphite complexes used commonly in coatings, film, sheet, molding, and extrusion. A complete line of cadmium/zinc stabilizers is also produced for FDA-sanctioned applications.


Offers Lubrizol 2106 overbased barium phenate for use as a PVC heat stabilizer. Product features high barium metal content in liquid form without the use of volatile solvent.

Lubrizol 2116 is an overbased barium carboxylate complex. Also in liquid form, it provides a typical 34% barium metal content in a light amber color.

Lubrizol 2117 is an overbased liquid calcium carboxylate, which has a light color and is free of any toxic components. Studies indicate that 14%-calcium Lubrizol 2117 offers significant formulating advantages in development of liquid calcium-containing stabilizer packages. The product is in compliance with FDA regulations for indirect food contact.


PVC stabilizers are offered in both powdered and liquid form for standard as well as nontoxic applications in plastisols, calendered films and other PVC compounds. Special stabilizers are available for mechanically frothed or chemically blown foams. Stabilizers are also available either to retard or accelerate chemical blowing agents such as azodicarbonamide.


A complete line of organotin heat stabilizers for rigid PVC is offered. Advastab TM-181 is a high-performance stabilizer for siding, profiles, injection and blow molding. Other grades include TM-692 for pipe; TM-694 low-cost heat stabilizer for pipe; TM-604 for injection molding; and TM-948 for general-purpose bottles.

Advastab TM-2080 is a high-performance, FDA-approved stabilizer for rigid PVC in food-contact applications. A "one-pack" multifunctional lubricating stabilizer, Advapak LS-203, is recommended for high-output PVC pipe production on twin-screw extruders.

Company's methyltin heat stabilizer, Advastab TM-404, for clear rigid PVC food packaging reportedly provides less odor than other organotin mercaptide stabilizers, as well as better early and mid-range color hold.


Manufactures cerium octoate (2-ethyl-hexanoate) for PVC silicone rubber, and various other polymers.


A complete line of PVC heat stabilizers is available, including various combinations of barium, cadmium and zinc, custom designed for flexible PVC, including plastisols and organosols.

For rigid PVC, a complete line of antimony mercaptides is offered for pipe. Products include antimony-based stabilizers, said to have an economic advantage over tins; a line of high-efficiency barium/cadmium powders with improved early color for outdoor use; a complete line of organotins for general-purpose bottles; and a full complement of nontoxic calcium/zinc and unique calcium/stannous/zinc powders and pastes for food-contact use. Dispersions of lead, barium, cadmium, tin and zinc-based compounds as concentrates or as pumpable pastes for automatic metering are available.

Company's Synpron 350 is a lead-free heat stabilizer for PVC wire and cable jacketing and insulation. It is a barium-zinc powder for use in noncritical applications and is said to be a direct replacement for most lead-based stabilizers, providing excellent color, long-term heat stability and good electrical properties.


One of the oldest stabilizer manufacturers in the U.S., company's Vanstay PVC heat stabilizers constitute a line of custom-formulated combinations of barium, calcium and zinc. Company also offers a complete line of FDA-sanctioned PVC heat stabilizers.


Company's Mark stabilizers include solid and liquid mixed-metal types for clear and pigmented, flexible and semi-rigid PVC, as well as plastisols, organosols and vinyl solutions.

Organotins include butyls, methyls and octyls, solids and liquids, sulfur and nonsulfur types for both high-impact and unmodified rigid compounds, including weather-resistant systems. These materials are used in bottles, water pipe, fittings, siding, rigid foam and window profiles.

FDA-regulated stabilizers include octyltins, methyltins, calcium/zincs and phosphites for food-wrap films, beverage bottles and vacuum-formed sheet. Phosphites are also offered for use as auxiliary stabilizers with mixed metal systems.

Special-purpose systems include one-package stabilizer/antifog additives for meat and produce wrap, stabilizer/activators and cell stabilizers for plastisol and calendered foams, and flooring stabilizers.

Antimony-based stabilizers for more economical stabilization of rigid PVC are offered for use in pipe and conduit.


Zinstabe line of zinc-based foam activator/stabilizers is offered in powdered form for use in calendered PVC and plastisol foams. They are said to combine heat and uv stabilization with catalytic activation of chemical blowing agents such as azodicarbonamide. Zinstabes reportedly control rate of cell formation and provide overblow protection. Further, they reportedly contain no heavy metals such as lead or cadmium and are consequently not prone to sulfide staining.
