PUTA urges govt to retrieve Azakhel Botanical Garden.

PESHAWAR -- Office bearers of Peshawar University Teachers Association (PUTA) have accused district Nowshera Nazim, Liaqat Khattak of occupying the Azakhel Botanical Garden in Nowshera, the property of University of Peshawar.

This was said by Dr Fazal Nasir, president of Peshawar University Teachers Association (PUTA)on Wednesday while talking to media at UoP. District Nowshera Nazim who is brother of Chief Minister Pervez Khattak was engaged in bargaining with Air University a private varsity, causing millions of losses to Peshawar varsity, he alleged.

According to PUTA information, the Nowshera Azakhel Botanical Garden is known as international research garden and it was awarded to varsity by the then CM Akram Khan Durrani in 2005 for 99 years lease. It also stated that it is one of the top 300 Botanical Research Gardens in the world where research in the field of plants and biodiversity is being carried out.

After the closure of research garden, the research related activities have greatly been affected and the plants laying there could be spoiled, said Fazal Nasir. He asked KP government to help retrieving the property of Uop being grabbed by Nazim with the help of district administration.

Mr Fazal went on to say that they had also recorded a protest on the arrival of PTI chairman Imran Khan on his visit to Pakistan Forest Institute of Agriculture University few days back.

Spokesperson PUTA, M. Farooq Khan told The Frontier Post that the Azakhel Botanical Garden was the legal property of UoP according to the agreement and explicit of Peshawar High Court order and adding the district Nazim Nowshera was violating the court,s order. He informed they had spent more than Rs 2millions for making the garden an international level research center in the respective field.

The PUTA representatives have also staged a sit-in in front of Azakhel Botanical Garden against the alleged occupation of it by district Nowshera Nazim.
