PUPS SAVED BY ICE; BATTERED BRITAIN After the snow, downpour brings more misery.

THEIR cruel owner tried to dump them in a canal, but luckily for these pups it was frozen over.

The tiny rottweiler-cross dogs were found in a bin bag by a walker who alerted the RSPCA and firefighters. Despite being weighed down by a paving stone, the sack still didn't break the ice.

They were plucked to safety from the Sheffield canal before hypothermia set in.

South Yorkshire RSPCA chief Matt Bell said: "This was a horrendous act of cruelty and it was just fortunate the ice held."
