PULSE BEST SEAT IN THE HOUSE.

Byline: Nicole Sunkes

Aitan Levy's customers were fed up with their standard-size toilet seats. Too small, they complained. And too flimsy. Bottom line - they were bummed out.

So the Sherman Oaks plumbing-fixture designer came up with a novel solution: a king-size seat for the plus-size crowd. He calls his invention the Big John Toilet Seat.

``The people that complained weren't just overweight,'' he says. ``They are big because they are tall, big because they're athletes, larger-framed, bigger-boned. And also because the way toilet seats are made, they are very flimsy.''

Big John Toilet Seats are more than 2 inches thicker than standard seats, with a wider sitting surface and a larger opening. They fit either round or elongated bowls and come with a lifetime guarantee not to break - something Levy says is unique to his product.

And the seats aren't just for bigger people. Levy says they can be useful for senior citizens and the physically impaired, or even those with an average-size rear who just want a more comfortable seat.

When Levy and business partner Gary Morgan hired a casting director to bring in people of all shapes and sizes to test a prototype, Levy says the seat was a hit.

``Everybody wanted one,'' Levy recalled. ``Large people break seats all the time. They need it. It's unbelievable the response we're getting.''

The seats are selling at a special introductory rate of $88 (list price is $168). For more information about the seats, or to order one, visit www.bigjohntoiletseat.com or call (866) 366-0669.

BLOOD TYPE AND CANCER, DIABETES: Fad diets come and go, but the ``Eat Right 4 Your Type'' diet, which determines the best diet for a person based on their blood type, has shown some resilience - so much so that its creator, Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo, has written two new books for specific diseases.

``Cancer: Fight It With the Blood Type Diet'' and ``Diabetes: Fight It With the Blood Type Diet'' (Berkley; $12 each) were written to meet the needs of people with these maladies.

The cancer book addresses treatment and prevention of the disease by following the blood-type diet and includes a cancer-risk quiz, blood-type food charts, a resource and product glossary and an index of terms.

The diabetes companion is also aimed at prevention and treatment for both types of the disease and includes many of the same features as its sister book, including a risk quiz and food charts.

FIGHTING ARTHRITIS: Arthritis can be a debilitating disease, and with the many treatment options available, it can cause as much confusion as it does pain. Dr. Joel Rutstein's new book, ``Take Back Control of Your Arthritis: The 12 Critical Steps'' (Xlibris; $19.95 at www.arthritismall.com, $21.95 on www.amazon.com) provides a road map for people with the disease.

The book discusses good and bad character traits of physicians, the power of prayer and meditation as part of a treatment program, and the benefits of sexual activity for sufferers. Rutstein also includes a list of arthritis-resource Web sites and a glossary of arthritis-related terms. For more information, visit www.arthritiscentral.com.
