PULITZER PUBLISHING NOMINATES ALICE B. HAYES TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS

 ST. LOUIS, April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Alice B. Hayes, executive vice president and provost of St. Louis University, has been nominated to the board of directors of Pulitzer Publishing Company (NASDAQ-NMS, MSE: PLTZ), the company announced today.
 Dr. Hayes will join two incumbent directors, Joseph Pulitzer Jr., chairman of the board of Pulitzer Publishing, and James M. Snowden Jr., vice president of A.G. Edwards & Sons, Inc., as the nominees for the three Class A directors to be elected at the company's annual meeting on May 12.
 Dr. Hayes, 55, was nominated for the board seat being vacated by Glenn A. Christopher, 71, who is retiring as vice chairman of the board. Mr. Christopher will become a director emeritus.
 Joseph Pulitzer and Michael E. Pulitzer, president and chief executive officer, said in a joint statement, "We are delighted that Dr. Hayes has agreed to join our board. Her extensive experience in education and in the administration of a large institution and her in-depth understanding of community issues will bring a valuable perspective."
 Dr. Hayes, who has been provost of St. Louis University since 1989, is responsible for general day-to-day administration of the university. She came to St. Louis University from Loyola University of Chicago, where she was vice president for academic affairs.
 At Loyola, Dr. Hayes chaired the Department of Natural Science and was dean of natural sciences before becoming an associate academic vice president in 1980. She received a Ph.D. in biological sciences from Northwestern University.
 Dr. Hayes is currently a member of the board of trustees of the St. Louis Science Center and the St. Louis Archdiocesan Catholic Charities. She also serves on the boards of directors of Rockhurst College and St. Louis University High School.
 Mr. Christopher served as president and chief executive officer of Pulitzer Publishing before becoming vice chairman in 1986. He was vice president - newspaper operations and general manager of the Post-Dispatch from 1978 through 1984. He joined Pulitzer Publishing in 1940, when he was hired by the Post-Dispatch as a messenger.

 Founded in St. Louis in 1878, Pulitzer Publishing is engaged in newspaper publishing and television and radio broadcasting. The company's newspaper operations include two major metropolitan dailies, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and the Arizona Daily Star in Tucson, Ariz., and a suburban daily and Sunday newspaper, the Southtown Economist, in the Chicago area.
 Broadcasting operations consist of seven network-affiliated television stations: WYFF in Greenville, S.C.; WGAL in Lancaster, Pa.; WXII in Winston-Salem, N.C.; KOAT in Albuquerque, N.M.; KETV in Omaha, Neb.; WLKY in Louisville, Ky.; and WDSU in New Orleans, La.; and two radio stations (KTAR-AM and KKLT-FM) in Phoenix, Ariz.
