PUFFING on my pipe in the street during the interval at the Philharmonic last week, who should join me to light up a cigarette but the painter Sir David Hockney.

He chuckled over a cutting from the New York Times, reporting the death of an American anti-smoking health fanatic - aged 52!

We also agreed that the government's move to remove tobacco displays in shops will put paid to as many businesses as the smoking ban has already shut pubs.

More nanny state hysteria.
