PU renames library science deptt.
According to Chairperson Prof Dr kanwal Ameen, the nomenclature of DLIS has been changed after due approval from the PU Syndicate.
She said information and knowledge were no more restricted to a book and a library and the user did not need to physically access a library to use information while people could access full-text information located anywhere in the world on their palmtops and tablets etc.
She said the phenomena had changed both the nature of our discipline and readers' expectations from the information professionals/librarians.
She said responding to these changes, professional practices and department names had been changed all over the world and: "We shall no more be considered just the custodians of books housed in a physical library. "
She said information professionals learn to identify, evaluate, select, acquire, organize, maintain, and disseminate information without any limitations of form, time, and space, adding that the discipline has developed systems and tools to meet the ever growing needs of information societies.
She said the HEC curriculum committee had already suggested changing the nomenclature of this discipline, adding that PU has taken lead in bringing the required change.
The chairperson PU DIM said the department had the honour of becoming member of CiSAP (Consortium of i-Schools in Asia-Pacific) in 2011.
