PU expert for open pit mining in Thar.

Punjab University Centre for Coal Technology is the latest addition to opponents of Thar Coal's Underground Coal Gasification (UCG). Center's Director Dr. Shahid Munir says open pit mining is the right strategy. This came to light during UK-Pakistan Coal Conference held at University of Leeds, UK (July 16). Punjab University issued a press statement about this. It says that facts and figures tell us that UCG is neither technically nor economically feasible. Also it is not commercial viable as not even one MW is being generated through this anywhere in the world. According to Dr. Shahid, low calorific gas with high vapors and pollutants will not generate enough power to be linked to National Grid. Pakistan should pursue proven and tested technologies like open pit mining. Focus of the conference was on using Pakistan coal for power generation. Several delegates from Pakistani universities, research units and petroleum companies took part in the conference.
