PTG Ships RAIDION 18-Gigabyte Ultra SCSI Drives

MINNEAPOLIS, May 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Peripheral Technology Group, Inc. (PTG), announced today shipment of its RAIDIONplus disk arrays and MICRODISK subsystem products incorporating state-of-the-art 18-Gbyte Ultra SCSI drives.

The new RAIDIONplus LTX+36000 is a 36-Gbyte external SCSI-to-SCSI disk array using the RAIDIONplus hardware controller, and incorporating the new 18-Gbyte Ultra drives. These new drives help take advantage of the RAIDIONplus Ultra-SCSI backplane interface, which is designed for 80Mb/sec transfer rates from the drives to the controller. With the new drive capacities, RAIDIONplus systems now offer up to 490 Gigabytes of fault-tolerant storage per array.

In addition to doubling the capacity available to RAIDION users, the new 18-Gbyte drives offer performance improvements of 20-40% over previous models. "For most users, the major benefits are extra capacity per drive along with lower cost per gigabyte," commented Robert Leong, PTG's manager of Applications Engineering. "But the higher linear bit densities and reduced access times of these drives result in much higher data transfer rates as well."

The LTX+36000 features Dynamic Expansion, which allows the addition of storage capacity without reformatting the array, and Adaptive Caching, which automatically adjusts for the type of data being transferred to maximize performance. Also, the RAIDIONplus controller has advanced array-management features that allow configuration, monitoring, and troubleshooting from a Windows-based client on a network or from a remote site via a dial-up modem or via the RAIDIONplus' integrated Ethernet interface.

For users requiring Ultra SCSI performance in single drive or JBOD applications, the MICRODISK LT offers 18-Gbyte Ultra drives within a modular external subsystem with a 3.5-inch LT form factor.
