PTA Reflections: where does the sky end?

Reflections is the National PTA's cultural arts program or students in grades K-12. In 1989-90, approximately 500,000 students across the nation participated in the Reflections program. The program was developed to interest children, parents, teachers and communities in the arts.

Each year PTAs around the country ask students to create works of art, based on a theme, in one of tour categories: literature, music, photography and the visual arts. Any student attending a school with a PTA/PTSA sponsoring the program may participate. The entries are categorized into four grade divisions--Primary (K-3), Intermediate (4-6), Junior High (7-9) and Senior High (10-12). The top state entries in each division are judged on creative ability and interpretation of theme.

First, second, third and honorable mention awards are given in each of the four grade divisions. An Outstanding Interpretation winner is selected in each of the four arts categories. All participants receive certificates of participation and have a book donated in their names to their school library. Top winners receive prizes such as trips to the National PTA convention, cash, encyclopedias and art supplies as well as recognition in the press. Four individual $750 scholarships are also available for high school seniors who enter the Reflections program.

Students who wish to participate must submit two original works, an essay and a statement from their local PTA president verifying student eligibility. A teacher's recommendation must be sent to the National PTA office. For additional information, contact the National PTA, Program Div., Attn: Reflections, 700 N. Rush Street, Chicago, Illinois 60611-2571. (312) 787-0977
