PSYCHOLOGISTS PRAISE CLINTON HEALTH PLAN FOR EXPANDING COMMITMENT TO MENTAL HEALTH CARE

WASHINGTON, Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Psychological Association (APA) today praised President Clinton for expanding the national commitment to mental health care in his health reform plan.
Senior Policy Adviser Dr. Bryant Welch said: "Psychological problems are at the heart of America's rising health care costs and are the single greatest factor in suppressing worker productivity. The president's commitment to expanding mental health coverage is vitally important for our economy and the health of our nation."
APA President Dr. Frank Farley added: "Expanded mental health care is integral to the president's commitment to provide health security and comprehensive coverage for all Americans."
At least half of usual visits to primary care physicians are for medical complaints stemming from psychological factors. One quarter of patients seen by primary care physicians have disabling psychological disorders.
Mental disorders are the health condition that most limits the ability to work, according to the Mental Health Policy Resource Center. These disorders are the third most limiting health condition in terms of performing major daily activities, preceded only by cancer and stroke.
APA is the leading professional association of psychologists in the United States with a membership of 120,000.
