PSNI TO REOPEN IRA GUN RUNNING PROBE; Fresh probe into Provos gun running.
THE IRA's Florida gun running operation will be reinvestigated, the PSNI confirmed last night.
The fresh probe comes after BBC Spotlight alleged Sean "Spike" Murray, right, was behind the plot. Gun runner Mike Logan claimed Sinn Fein man Murray told him one of the pistols had been used to kill two policemen in 1997.
After the programme, a PSNI spokeswoman said: "PIRA gun TURN TO PAGE 10 FROM PAGE ONE running from Florida is now subject to reinvestigation which will include an examination of existing evidence and any potential new evidence that has come to light in the last few days."
This announcement came after DUP politicians Arlene Foster and David Simpson met with senior PSNI officers.
After the talks they said last night: "There was a guarantee that evidence would be followed, regardless of where it may lead, or whom it may involve."
Irish American Logan said 400 pistols were smuggled to Northern Ireland.
He added: "He [Murray] would write down by brand and calibre and say, 'These were they ones we got is that the one you sent'?" Murray insisted Logan's accusations were "without foundation".
