PSE&G CUSTOMERS TO HELP MOW DOWN POLLUTION BY EXCHANGING GASOLINE LAWN MOWERS FOR ELECTRIC MOWERS

NEWARK, N.J., March 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) is looking for participants for the EnviroLawn Project -- a research study examining the need for emission standards for gasoline lawn mowers while gauging public acceptance of cordless, battery-operated electric mowers.
PSE&G is one of 20 electric utility companies jointly sponsoring the research project in conjunction with the Electric Power Research Institute, the Edison Electric Institute, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Under the EnviroLawn Project, PSE&G will exchange 100 Black & Decker cordless electric lawn mowers (retail value $450) for the push-type gasoline mowers of 100 PSE&G residential electric customers. Customers selected to participate in the EnviroLawn Project will be required to respond to consumer information surveys about the electric mowers.
The EPA estimates that the typical gasoline-powered lawn mower produces as much ozone-creating pollutants in one hour as driving an automobile 50 miles. Gasoline mowers collected by PSE&G and other utilities participating in the EnviroLawn Project will undergo emissions testing by the EPA, which will use the data in determining the need for emission standards and ways to reduce emissions from gasoline-powered mowers.
PSE&G will select those mowers deemed appropriate. Eligible participants must be a PSE&G residential electric customer mowing their own lawn of one-quarter acre or less. The trade-in mower must be a working gasoline push-type mower (two or four cycle engine), not self- propelled, which would be exchanged for the cordless electric mower. PSE&G electric customers who would like to participate should send their name, address, PSE&G account number, the make and age of their gasoline mower, and day and evening telephone numbers to the following address: PSE&G EnviroLawn Project, T-11A, P.O. Box 1886, Newark, N.J. 07101-1886. Customers may also look for advertisements including eligibility requirements and an application which will be published, beginning today, in newspapers in PSE&G's service territory.
Customers who participate must be willing to exchange their mowers at a location designated by PSE&G. The mower exchange will be this spring. If dissatisfied, customers have 30 days to return the cordless Black & Decker mower and receive back their gasoline mower.
